In the midst of family reunification of parents separated from their children at the border – many of us have been asking the question of how can we help? A sister congregation of ours on the border in El Paso has requested our assistance. Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey is similar to Luther Place in many ways – they host an arts-based summer camp, run a service learning immersion program like the Steinbruck Center, and helped start Border Servant Corp, like the Lutheran Volunteer Corps. A delegation of Luther Place young adults visited in 2015 and can testify that this church always responds to the needs of their community.
Cristo Rey is in desperate needs of money and supplies, to aid with the family reunification process. As a partner of Annunciation House, an immigrant shelter, Cristo Rey will be one of the sites for the 400 to 500 parents and kids each week that will be reunited before the deadline of July 26. Cristo Rey will need financial help for an additional refrigerator, food, supplies and clothing.
Their goal is only $3,000 and we plan to raise that this on Sunday, July 22 at a special collection at our ArtSmart Celebration Sunday.
Additional donations can be sent Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey – 1010 East Yandell Drive – El Paso, TX 79902. Please put in the Memo: Refugee & Immigrant Assistance.
