Lent 37 Holy Wednesday

by Pastor Karen Brau
Readings: Isaiah 50:4-9a, Psalm 70, Hebrews 12:1-3, John 13:21-32

In the gospel of John for today, we get the story of Jesus’ betrayal by Judas. I wonder how Judas was experiencing God in the time leading up to the deal he made to turn Jesus over to the authorities. Was Judas unhappy with the teaching Jesus offered? Did it seem too radical or disruptive or naive? Or did Judas find himself unable to feel God’s good loving coming towards him as Jesus taught about the reign of God? We will not ever be sure of what are the feelings that led Judas to act in such a strong way against Jesus, yet Judas reminds us again that there is strong resistance to the Kingdom of God.

We live into this resistance in Holy Week, and it is important that we are reminded that we ourselves may have these feelings of wanting to betray Jesus. Perhaps this year we take into our desert space the honesty that sometimes we want to be done with Jesus. Today,  just sit with your own resistance to the gospel for awhile.

Holy God, as we travel this week with you in Holy Week, help us to be honest about the times we are resistors to your gospel message. May we just sit with that. In Jesus name, Amen.
