Habitat Partnership

About a year ago, the Steinbruck Center received a call from Habitat for Humanity of Washington, DC asking if we could potentially host a “voluntourism”  group. Voluntourism combines travel and volunteering for a charitable cause; in the case of Habitat of DC their Learn and Build Experience is for high school and college students to come together as a team to build with Habitat for Humanity. In addition to building, the groups take part in various hands-on educational and community activities.

The Steinbruck Center has hosted five Learn and Build teams. The teams stay in the Steinbruck Center Hostel and live together in a community setting, participating in educational workshops and cooking meals together. We provide their orientation to Washington, DC and the groups even participate in some of our community events!

A Learn and Build group participated in our Summer SoulFiesta block party, helping set up, serving food, and running all the game stations. This partnership has other tangible benefits – Luther Place members are able to serve on Habitat work sites all over DC. This past Saturday a group of Luther Place folks went to the Habitat Build site in the Deanwood neighborhood in North East Washington, DC and spent the day putting up siding and caulking. We are able to volunteer on the third Saturday of every other month – consider coming out in the coming months!
