How long have you been a member of Luther Place?
I have been involved with Luther Place since I was a college student at GWU in the mid-1980’s. My husband Rick and I were married at LP in 1993 and have raised our 4 kids to be active participants in the community. Over the past 30 years I have been involved in a wide range of volunteer activities. I have served on Church Council, taught children’s Sunday School, and participated in the service an usher / communion assistant / lector. I am currently engaged with our Wise Elders group – organizing a quarterly inter-generational luncheon and visiting home-bound members. With our Racial Justice team I have recently studied the theologian, Howard Thurman, participated in the synod #Decolonize2017 conference, and organized visits to historical African-American sites. I see my participation in Luther Place’s vision of becoming a more intentionally welcoming community as living out Christ’s message in the world.
How have you shared your time and talents with the Luther Place community?
My favorite Luther Place memories surround baptisms. I think Luther Place has a special way of welcoming children into our community. We as a congregation commit to supporting the family and child in their life inside and outside the church. After Pastor has blessed the child, there is a procession around the congregation as we sing “Welcome Child of God”. Everyone smiles and reaches out to pat the baby and personally welcome them into the community. It always brings tears to my eyes.
What is your favorite memory from volunteering/serving at Luther Place?
Luther Place is my family. Serving our community, worshiping together, growing together in Christ brings us all together.
